- Usually when we think of Parkinson's Disease (PD), we visualize an older
- person with difficulty in walking, expressionless face and a typical tremor
- apparent when the person is quietly at rest. But a new, small group of
- Parkinsonian patients whose symptoms first appear gradually well before they
- reach the age of fifty, have now been identified and are classified as
- Young-Onset Parkinson's Disease. These patients face an altogether different
- set of problems as the subtle symptoms affect their movements. The stiffness
- and slowness of movement is often mistaken as fatigue or clumsiness, and when
- tremor is present, it may be mistaken for nervousness. An unusual booklet
- about this condition, written by Cheryl Janusz and Dr. Niall P. Quinn,
- entitled "Parkinson's Disease: The Young Patient Experience" describes the
- problems of these young people in detail, describing the causes of the disease
- and how it differs from typical PD, as well as the unique family, work and
- social problems faced by people with this disease. Much of the material is
- drawn from actual interviews with real people, and the booklet is filled with
- practical suggestions. Its yours, free upon request by writing to Young
- Patient Booklet, United Parkinson Foundation, Department AB, 360 West Superior
- Street, Chicago, Illinois 60610. Please enclose a stamped, self addressed
- business size envelope. You will find this richly rewarding reading.
